FISHING FOR DREAMS

FISHING FOR DREAMS

from $1,100.00

Honshu, Japan

It was a beautiful, misty New Year's day in Japan when I stopped under this tree for shelter from the rain. I was immediately inspired to photograph the clean lines of this fish screen that led the eye into the soft-lit day along the lake.

But it was when I got home and spent time looking at this image that I found a deeper narrative in the picture.

This happens a lot - meaning emerges in a photograph that wasn't there when it was taken. And that transformation from an aesthetically pleasing sight to a deeper and more personal truth is the very essence of art.

In some ways, photography can feel like I'm fishing for dreams - I'm seeking peace and beauty in the world and hoping to create images that evoke depth, mood, and greater introspection to those who view them.

This practice has helped me develop awareness in my life.

I have learned to give equal attention to the space and the forms within a photographic composition - not just because it leads to more dynamic and compelling images, but because it reflects a personal truth.

This photo contains a narrative about the importance of space, or spaciousness. Fish are trapped in this wall-like structure because they are drawn to its form. In the same way, we can be led into a more confined experience of life by focusing solely on the forms of a problem, desire, or emotion.

When we focus on the space within our lives - the ever-stretching lake in which we swim - we find room for what exists outside the form of a problem. Serenity is found in the spaciousness.

Of course, the way you connect with this image could invoke an entirely different narrative and theme. In fact, I hope it does. My goal is to present enough space in my photographs, so viewers have room for their own meanings to emerge.

Designed to evoke stillness and spaciousness

Throughout human history, people have voyaged far and wide in search of peace and understanding of the world. In new lands, they were met with visions that filled their hearts and minds – towering mountains, soft waves, spiraling branches, and expanses of brilliant white snow. And though many of us have not embarked on extended spiritual pilgrimages, we have all experienced the expansion of our minds and hearts as we witness a breathtaking view. Embracing the power of beauty and the landscape on our mood, these photographs are designed to evoke peace and stillness - and provide the space to embrace the full breadth of our emotions.

Science tells us about the power of beauty

Studies show that focusing on beauty and serenity in nature creates lasting positive effects – increasing happiness, positive social interactions, and a sense of meaning and purpose in life. In one study, 95% of those interviewed said their mood improved after spending time outside – noting a decrease in depression, stress, and anxiety. Time in nature has also proven to increase our ability to pay attention and live in the present moment. Nature is vital to our well-being, but not all of us have a beautiful setting outside our windows. That’s why we need art.

Bring beauty into your home

Scientists have confirmed that viewing scenes of nature in art can positively impact your health and well-being almost as effectively as visiting a beautiful environment. Art allows us to enjoy our morning coffee at a temple in Kyoto and cuddle up with our pets by the stunning coast of Maui. To spend our days in the bustle of the city and return home to the tranquility of a breathtaking view. Fine art photography is more than an image - it is your calm in the chaos, an uplifting breath on a troubling day, and the stillness to embrace your most authentic emotions and nurture your best self.
