If you’re alive, you can’t be bored in San Francisco.
If you’re not alive, San Francisco will bring you to life.

TURNING A SPARK INTO FIRE - IN THE CITY BY THE BAY

Join me in San Francisco, one of the world's most photogenic cities and home to the iconic Golden Gate, to learn how to capture the spirit of a place in powerful, personal, and expressive images. As a photographer who has been working with the subject of San Francisco for over 20 years and looking at it like a second home - it is only fitting that I launch this new series of workshops here.

During my photography workshops, you'll have the opportunity to explore your own personal means of expression while I guide you through the essential technical and creative aspects that go into every evocative photograph. You'll learn how to get the strongest image in-camera, improve your composition skills and exposure techniques, and create more dynamic photographs more often. We will touch on every aspect of the photographic process from beginning to end, vision to expression.

But beyond the technical skills, the real joy of every workshop is getting out into the world and seeing it with a fresh eye. Together, we'll capture the world's beauty and communicate that wonder in an expressive and meaningful way. Join me for an unforgettable photography adventure that will transform how you see and capture the world in your photographs.

SAN FRANCISCO PHOTO WORKSHOP

Creating exceptional images and a compelling portfolio requires more than camera and Photoshop skills. While it's essential to know the fundamentals of photography, learning to be a sensitive and artistic photographer involves shifting your mindset so you can imagine the world in more insightful and meaningful ways. To achieve excellence, technical skills are necessary, but so is sense and sensibility. The most successful and illuminating photographers understand how much their adventure with a camera is a journey of self-awareness. True artistry comes from the creative expression of individuality. But it can take some guidance and inspiration before you learn to release your creative potential.

The "Igniting Your Creative Vision" workshop is an opportunity for passionate photographers to enhance their digital skills, improve their editing process and sharpen their knowledge of how to find, compose and craft exceptional images and a smartly-edited series. The program is geared toward people who want to achieve a more informed and insightful connection with their camera and with what they want to express through their images. The engagement provides focused, critical feedback and a more personalized level of instruction to help you find the best way forward with your photography.

Attention is paid to all aspects of a photographer's development - including practical guidance for:

•how to find the most evocative composition when considering a landscape
•how to make use of optimal and creative exposures to create mood and drama
•how to improve your developing techniques in the digital darkroom and work in a more effective way
•how to archive and sensitively edit a collection of images into a high-quality portfolio
•how to create a unique identity and personal vision as a photographer
•how to work with the top printers in the country to see your work manifested in physical form

The San Francisco Photo Workshop is a group arrangement flexibly shaped to the needs and goals of each participant. During the 2 1/2 day in-the-field workshop, I will work closely with a small and intimate group of 3-5 participants, exploring ways to make more resonant, meaningful, and aesthetically powerful images. Each "Igniting Your Creative Vision" workshop is built around the best way to inform, instruct, motivate, and inspire each participant to achieve the best of their creative abilities. Helpful, critical feedback is offered throughout so participants gain a clearer, more insightful understanding of how to master their own photographic language.

The workshop starts with an immersive 2 1/2 day in-the-field photography workshop in San Francisco, California. Each workshop day is filled with challenges that encourage a more intimate understanding of how to use your camera to capture and create something extraordinary, from the iconic city and bridge views to lesser-known intimate settings. Equal emphasis is paid to improving your technical skills and workflow process while opening up a more creatively expressive viewpoint.

The balance of the workshop will take place after you return home. Each participant and I will connect privately one-on-one via Zoom in two 90-minute sessions to delve deeper into Editing, Developing & digital darkroom techniques, portfolio building, and printing and finishing. All presented work is thoughtfully critiqued, and helpful guidance and encouragement are offered.

This workshop series is unique in its commitment to encouraging participants to see the profound effect photography can have on their lives and how it can positively affect their personal awareness. How you see and feel the world around you matters to the quality of your photography. The most effective means of achieving artistic excellence in photography is establishing the right mindset when considering a particular place or scene.

WHY CHOOSE MY PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS?

First, you need to resonate with and feel moved by my work, as this connection can lead to greater inspiration and growth. When you respond more profoundly to the artwork, the curiosity and desire for insight grow. This is where connection begins, and a mentor can add much value to a student's path.

Next, I aim to assist you in walking away with further technical knowledge, photographic inspiration, and a deeper understanding of creative perspective and process. My priority is to ensure the workshop is focused on your learning and growth, and any photography I do during the workshop is to lead by example and enhance your experience. Participants in my workshops always come first.

Next, an instructor must be able to showcase a substantial collection of spirited work and success in the photographic marketplace before they attempt to pass on knowledge and guidance. This is where information and inspiration are drawn from. I am 20+ years into my fine art photography journey, and I have:

  • Been earning my living solely as a professional fine art landscape photographer for 17+ years and continue to gain new collectors from around the globe, including the likes of famous athletes and team owners from the NBA and NFL, Hollywood actors, and Fortune 500 CEO’s, to name a few.

  • Guided over 300 passionate photographers along their photographic journey through private workshops and mentoring programs.

  • Exhibited and sold work in galleries and exhibitions in the US and internationally.

  • Been awarded over 75 international photography awards.

  • Have artwork in a museum collection seen by over a million people annually.

  • Been published in numerous publications, including Medium Format Magazine, Outdoor Photographer, American Photo, Light and Landscape Magazine, Black and White Magazine, Wailea Magazine, and others.

  • Established long-term working relationships with the country's top printers and fine art finishers.

  • Have worked as a fine art photography consultant, gallery director, and self-represented artist and have sold over 4 million dollars worth of fine art landscape photography by David Fokos, Peter Lik, Charles Cramer, and others, in addition to my work.

These experiences have given me a deep understanding of fine art photography's creative and business aspects, which I'm excited to share with you during our time together.

TESTIMONIAL EXCERPTS

I highly recommend Scott no matter where you are on your photographic path. I imagine everyone could benefit from his knowledge and especially his approach.
— Randy Root - Telluride, Colorado
My workshop with Scott really opened up the world of fine art photography for me. I learned so much and continue to build upon what he taught me.
— Laurie Drake - Knoxville, Tennessee
I honestly believe my photography skills grew 100x after my workshop with Scott. His passion, experience, and knowledge of photography are extremely valuable. The workshop is very well organized to produce the highest and best use of the time. He fits a lot in but makes sure to take the time where it’s needed most. His stories are lesson’s in themselves and his work speaks for itself. I highly recommend investing in a workshop as you won’t be disappointed. I walked away with some amazing images, but more importantly, the skills to replicate similar high-quality images moving forward through future travels. I’m very much looking forward to connecting again with Scott through future workshops and mentorship opportunities!
— Ryan Waddell - Sacramento, California
Scott is every bit as inspirational and engaging as his photographs. His passion and generosity left me feeling very privileged to have spent time shooting with him. Scott was exceptionally invested in making sure I got the most out of the session. Not only in understanding my skill level and what I wanted from the workshop, but in what I wanted out of my photography generally. He asked questions that I have to admit I had never asked myself and that helped me to realize why my photography up to now has generally been so ‘unfocused’... I left the workshop buzzing. Scott helped me refine my technical skills and taught me new techniques. But most significantly, he encouraged me to ‘feel’ as much as ‘think’ about my photographs which is something that has already had quite a profound affect on me. I came away with a greater confidence in my photography and some great images, but most importantly a renewed excitement, passion and focus for why I go out shooting in the first place.
— Amanda Morrison - London, England

Easy.

WEATHER & LIGHT

  •  Temps:  67℉ hi | 54℉ low

  •  Sunrise/Sunset:  5:53am | 8:36pm

  • Weather: Foggy. I have chosen this time of year because of the fog. We want foggy conditions, and ideally to capture it when it’s moving in and out of the bay. The classic pattern in July is fog on the coast in the morning, cool and mid to upper 50's, burning off by around 10 am, sunny and low 60's until around 3 pm when the cool wind from the ocean starts up, and the fog rolls back in.
