My Stillness Speaks portfolio began a couple of years ago with a small selection of images, and has now been rounded out with over 20 new works from Japan.

The intention of these images has always been to evoke peacefulness. They use spaciousness, subtle color and minimal elements to achieve that.

I spent three weeks on this trip to Japan. I revisited areas I’ve photographed before on the main island of Honshu, and discovered new landscapes on the northern island of Hokkaido. Both places yielded stunning scenery.

I discovered a new found love - photographing in the snow.

I found new flavors, and met new people.

I was challenged. I went from whining ‘everything is crap’ while snowshoeing around a mountain in bad light, to witnessing the full moon rise at twilight and feeling deeply ‘this is the most magical world’, to getting semi-lost in a dark forest and feeling a panic of ‘Am I gonna get out of here?’ - all in the span of a couple of hours.

Most of all, I have learned to see with clearer vision. I have become a little better as an observer. An observer of light and shadow, color and contrast, of self and spirit.

The magic of Japan is a special place for both my eye and heart.
