JAWS - MAUI SURF BREAKS BIG
Jackie and I had worked together the last two years and this year we decided to do a two day photo workshop, allowing us more time to get to some of the further out spots of Maui and the Hana side. The first day, Jaws was breaking BIG - like, 40+ feet - so after a quick sunrise shoot at Ho'okipa Point, we made our way down the road to Pe'ahi.
Over the course of the next 90 minutes, we both shot many frames of these incredible surfers riding these beautiful epic waves.
It doesn't seem too long ago that there were maybe 10 guys in the world that were surfing these monster waves. Not anymore. There's 35 surfers in the above picture and there's still at least a dozen more out of the frame.
These surfers are incredible world-class athletes with insane focus and nerves-of-steel - and that's putting it mildly.
What a wonderful way to start a two-day photography workshop, I have to say. From photographing Jaws, we continued on to Wainapanapa State Park, a secret black sand beach, and many more stunning locations over the two days.
And, for those surfers that were out there taking on these epic waves - Bravo!
